Update on GEM from Paws of Texas Rescue

Unfortunately, Gem's puppies did not survive. The vet said it was likely due to lack of care before she was rescued and went into foster care with Paws of Texas Rescue. Despite Paws best efforts the pups weren't strong enough to make it. Paws of TX Rescue next focus for her is dental cleaning which, as you can see from her photo is badly needed. She will likely lose most of her back teeth.

Our condolences and sympathy are with Paws of Texas and Gem. Everyone here in the Northeast was rooting for her pups. We know that Paws of TX Rescue did all they could to help Gem have a healthy pregnancy. But now, with everyone's help, Gem can get healthy and find a loving forever home.

Paws of Texas Rescue would like to have her spay and dental done at the same time so she only goes under anesthesia once but this will cost about $400. They can't do it with out help. Max - The 'Healing' Dog

Max and Molly are beautiful brother and sister Bassets that ABC rescued. The original owners neglected them and left them outdoors unsupervised. Thankfully, they were relinquished to ABC when they were about two years old. They then went into the excellent foster care of Kevin Kraft. Laura Johnson, ABC volunteer who helps with behavior problem cases, fosters for ABC, and coordinates dog boarding in Rochester, adopted Molly (McButter J). She also transported Max to what was intended to be his forever home. The following events that unfolded make for a truly amazing tale. Max’ story shows why every rescue dog deserves a 2^nd, and even 3^rd chance. We are very grateful to Laura, Bruce, Lucille and their neighbors for sharing this wonderful story with us. Thank you ABC for believing and helping Max - twice! And we are grateful to Max too for making it all happen!

Max’ newly adopted humans returned him to ABC six short months after his adoption. The reasons they cited were that their other dog bullied him and that Max did not live up to their expectations. They had also medicated him with anti-depressants for being vicious, an indication that perhaps more was going on with Max than being ’bullied’.

Thankfully, ABC will always take back their rescued hounds. This commitment provides a safety net of support for each dog. Laura stepped up right away to provide Max with a foster home, even though she was already fostering another dog, Fenway. Whether it was some special wisdom on Laura’s part or Max’ own foresight - probably both - this proved very fortuitous for the folks that were soon to meet Max.

Max - Basset Angel

A nice couple, Bruce and Lucille visited Laura’s home to interview for Fenway’s adoption. Bruce suffers from pain severe enough to be on pain medications. The couple had lost their Basset, Charlie, about 3 months earlier. Charlie had helped Bruce cope with pain and avoid taking the pain medication, so they were looking to adopt another Basset.

Now Fenway had been a stray and was still learning how a dog should behave around humans. Laura says, “He would literally ‘smile’, and jump in your face like he was trying to bite you. If you didn’t know him it looked like he was being aggressive.” (As a side note here, our first Basset puppy, Apollo, used to do this exact thing. Our trainer and vet said this needed to be dealt with as it showed a prelude to aggression. My gut feeling was it was not aggression and just puppy antics. When our trainer wanted to use shock therapy we trusted my gut and fired the trainer. We could have been wrong, but Apollo turned out to be one of the sweetest, most gentle hounds I’ve ever met. He loves all people and animals and would not hurt a fly. It is as important to not mislabel behavior as aggressive that may not be, as it is to deal with it.)

However, Bruce and Lucille, even though experienced dog folk, had been attacked by a greyhound that they had adopted. This occurred just a few days before their interview with Laura. Lucille had staples in her head from the attack! As a result, Fenway’s behavior put them off adopting him. They felt badly about it but said they would not feel comfortable with him. Makes you wonder if maybe everything does happen for a reason.

As Laura returned Fenway to the yard in came Max. Thankfully, ABC had believed in him enough to have him evaluated by their behaviorist who found him to be well adjusted for a good home. He was taken off of the ill-advised anti-depressants. ABC also treated Max for ear infections and broken nails, signs that his former home had been less than ideal in caring for him. So Max was back to his happy, healthy self when he met Bruce and Lucille. As Laura told the couple his story Max sat next to them and affectionately put his nose in Bruce’s lap. Laura describes Max as a natural empathic soul. That is how Max was adopted into the forever home he was obviously destined to be part of.

And such a handsome face too!

Shortly after Bruce and Lucille took Max home, Laura received a call from the happy couple - Bruce had not needed any pain medication in days! They both said they felt lucky to have met and adopted Max. Laura thought the case happily closed, and, as she says, “It doesn’t get better than that!!” But it does!

Bruce visited Laura recently to relay the following amazing story of Max turned ‘healer’. Max’s new family has neighbors with a seven year old boy who suffers from brain cancer. The boy used to play with the couple’s other Basset, Charlie. Now he came over to play with Max. The boy told his oncologist that he couldn’t wait to go home from the hospital to play with ‘Max’. His doctor thought Max was another little boy. When the doctor found out that Max was a dog he called Bruce and reported that, because of Max, this little boy was eating, exercising and sleeping well, all things that are very difficult for cancer patients. The fatigue, pain and nausea caused by anti-cancer treatments often overwhelm the treatment plan. The doctor said the boy was experiencing almost no side effects from the chemotherapy and radiation he was undergoing. As any oncologist will tell you, this is awfully important for the treatments to be successful. (As one who has been there, while undergoing chemo my 3 Bassets not only forced me to exercise every day, but also gave me a sense of security, comfort and the confidence that I could overcome the side effects, just as important as exercise.)

The oncologist suggested Bruce and Lucille get Max certified as a therapy dog. They did that and Max now spends three days a week with their neighbor’s son, and also visits other children with cancer at Strong Hospital Children’s Cancer Ward. Maybe someday Max’s friend can write his story so that other children with cancer can also be inspired by his example. We will keep you updated, as we are sure there will be many more inspiring stories of Max’ progress.

“Max is a healing dog!”

It is more amazing still that Max was relinquished twice by families who obviously did not know the angel they had in their homes. This is why rescuers work so hard at what they do and as you will often hear from ABC volunteers, “Stories like this make all the extra work worth it.”

Congratulations to Max, his family, his friends and to the doctor who recognized the value of one Basset Hound in easing the suffering of a little boy. We wish Bruce and Max’s new friends healing and many happy, healthy years to enjoy.

Paws of Texas Rescue - GEM's Story Update

Gem today!

Gem was one of the four pregnant Bassets rescued on New Year's Eve from a Texas breeder (See Gem's Blog story from 12/31/2011.) She was taken into foster care by Paws of Texas Rescue who had the resources to deal with her pregnancy. Besides being severely underweight Gem has teeth abscesses. The special Basset angels at Paws have been feeding her a special diet to help her gain weight and vitamins to help ensure a healthy pregnancy. Here's a new picture of how she looks today. So much better! Thank you Paws Rescue for the TLC and special care you have been showing this elegant senior lady. We hope that she will deliver healthy puppies without any problems and can retire to enjoy life in a loving forever family.

"Gem loved her trip to the pet store. Isn't she beautiful?! She's so sweet and loving. We have an appointment with the vet tomorrow to see how her pregnancy is progressing. We are still concerned since she hasn't put on as much weight as we would like, but we see some bulges when she lays down. :)"

Rags to Ribbons: Diesel and Princess win AKC Agility Trials!

Diesel's 1st Place Blue Ribbon

Agility is one of the fastest growing dog sports at the AKC and in the U.S. It is an athletic event that requires conditioning, concentration, training and teamwork. It is a great way to safely exercise dogs, as well as the humans too!

Two ABC adopted Basset Hounds have recently won AKC Agility ribbons. Shelly Gordon (Vice Chairman of ABC, runs the Slobber Shoppe AND is ABC webmaster), recently won the AKC JWW Novice Agility run with her adopted hound, Diesel Gustav Gordon. Congratulations to Shelly and Diesel! (We were curious about how Diesel got his name. The only dog we ever knew named Diesel worked in a gas station. Turns out his name when Shelly adopted him from ABC was Mr. Cheesel.) Shelly and Diesel train in Buffalo. They compete against other dogs that jump 8", like Corgies, Doxies and other small dogs. Amanda Lowery is their amazing instructor. Shelly also has another Basset, Eeyore who is testing to be a nursing home therapy dog. Good job Shelly and Diesel, Eeyore and you too Duke!

Amazingly, another ABC alumni, Princess, and her Mom, Lisa Lucas, are agility stars as well. Princess is the #1 Basset Hound in AKC Agility Trials in the country - and, she recently received the 1st ever AKC Basset Hound agility PAX title! Now, that's impressive! (Actually, we think it's impressive to see hounds that actually listen to their humans.)

Lisa just adopted another ABC Basset, Bosley. We're sure there is a super star in Bosley's future also. It would be great to see all 3 ABC hounds competing with each other in agility!

I just wanted to give everyone a better idea of Clara's past. She is from Virigina/Tennesse border. She was found wandering the streets for a while with no collar, looking for food. Someone finally found her and called the Warden. Clara was taken to a kill shelter on a 5 day hold. On day 5 a nice woman took Clara from the Shelter and made a call to Julie Masterman (Clara's transporter).
Without hesitation Julie made the call to ABC and the rest as we say "is history."

Basset Hound Adopt-A-Thon - Huge Success!

Simon and His New Best Friend!

ABC's Basset Hound Adopt-A-Thon held at Camp Bow Wow, Tonawanda, NY on Sunday was a HUGE success. In addition to the 16 dogs that ABC transported from four Southern Basset Rescues (Belly Rubs Basset Rescue of TN, Basset Hound Rescue of GA, N. Texas Basset Rescue, Dakota Rescue of TX) there were also five dogs relinquished in NY that were adopted. (Three of the Southern Bassets were placed into foster care to work out health issues before being placed up for adoption). 18 homeless Bassets were placed into pre-approved permanent homes! This was the result of three weeks of hard work volunteers spent to set up and coordinate the transport, review potential adoptive homes and review the Basset's individual personalities with the goal of providing the perfect fit for each approved family. ABC had received a flood of adoption applications after they transported 5 Basset Hounds on New Year's Eve from a Texas breeder which was widely publicized. With so many approved families wanting to adopt a Basset Hound in Northeastern NY the ABC board decided to put out the call to Southern Basset Rescues which are overloaded to the breaking point with homeless hounds. This was a groundbreaking event, the first cooperative undertaking between so many rescues to re-home homeless hounds. Hopefully, it will be the start of many rescues following ABC's lead in re-homing hounds across the country in the future!

Copper from TN and his Adopted Family

Over the weekend, in an impossibly short period of time, six ABC volunteers made the trip to Maryville, Tennessee to meet the rescue groups at the Assured Storage Facility and begin the 12 hour drive North to Camp Bow Wow. It was dubbed the Basset Hound Underground Railroad by one Georgia Rescuer. Round trip for Neil Gates and Justin Beabes who drove the ABC van from NY was 1700 miles, 2 gas fuel ups and only 2-3 other breaks. They arrived at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in Tonawanda. Their arrival was closely watched via Camp Bow Wow's webcams in realtime by hundreds of excited folks. The weather had been snowy in the North, with freezing rain to the West and all involved were anxious that the transport arrive safely. Southern rescue foster homes watched with great relief as their foster hounds walked into Camp Bow Wow, noting their excitement and relief on Facebook. The hounds themselves were amazingly calm and seemed to take these changes in stride, a tribute to the great network of support and understanding ABC has for this breed. Thanks to the Assured Storage Facility that provided a location for the meetup and overnight stay of the volunteers and hounds! And thanks also to Camp Bow Wow who housed the hounds overnight for free and hosted the Adopt-A-Thon! (We also heard the owners adopted a hound!) They provided the perfect venue for this event. Special thanks to all of the Rescues that gave up their beloved hounds to travel to NY to find forever homes in order that others might have a foster home!

The hounds themselves, groomed and bathed prior to the event seemed to take it all in stride, appearing at least to be picking out their new families! Following is a touching video Justin Beabes captured of the event:

ABC volunteers posted updates in real time as the hounds were adopted. The FB comments are a real testament to the commitment and love the foster homes provide for these hounds. It was really an inspiration to read the excited happiness and tears of joy they posted on Facebook as each Basset was adopted. In fact, not just the foster homes, but hundreds of others from many states posted their excitement and congratulations on Facebook. Many noted this was an inspirational event, not just for the dogs and volunteers but for everyone involved in rescue. This certainly has to be a first for a rescue event of this kind. Laura Johnson, ABC volunteer, seems to have said it all in her FB comment: "The dogs come first, and the humans that care for them have a never ending supply of love, dedication and work ethic. Thank you ABC, you make the world a better place, not just for the dogs, but a blessing for those that are given the opportunity to help out."

The world certainly does seem a better place! The looks on the faces of the happy families and the wagging tails of hounds seems to say it all. And as Gary Penny, Chairman of ABC, always says,

"It's all about the dogs!"

"Basset Underground Railroad"

Break Time in Columbus, OH

On the way from TN to Buffalo, NY, ABC Basset Rescue of NY is transporting 20 hounds to NY's adoption event where they have adoptive families anxiously awaiting their arrival. Many of these bassets are from Belly Rubs Basset Hound Rescue, Dakota Ranch in Texas, and Basset Hound Rescue of Georgia, whose rescues have more hounds than homes. Due to media coverage of ABC's last rescue of 5 Texas Basset Hounds new prospective families applied to ABC to adopt homeless hounds. The wonderful efforts of ABC Basset Rescue volunteers frees up much needed space in the Southern rescues for homeless hounds there. Gary Penny, board chairman for the New York-based ABC Basset Hound Rescue, said about 20 families have already been screened and are now waiting to be matched up with the animals during an adoption fair Sunday. This is the first time so many Basset Rescue groups have met up like this to move homeless hounds up the coast where there are waiting homes.

Basset Hound Rescue of Georgia (BHRG) and Belly Rubs Basset Hound Rescue met up with ABC at the Assured Storage Facility in Maryville, TN last night. ABC loaded up 16 hounds there and left early this morning for the 15 hour drive to Buffalo, NY. Roger Imsande with Basset Hound Rescue of Georgia (BHRG) named it “The Basset Underground Railroad.” Many thanks to Kathy Sands, Assured Storage Manager for volunteering their facility for the meeting and allowing these Bassets to get some much needed rest before their long journey North.

This is a true labor of love on the part of these volunteer rescuers transporting so many Basset Hounds so many miles, on this snowy day in the Northeast to be adopted into forever homes. Safe journey to the transport on the remaining 150 miles still to go to Buffalo. These hounds will make a wonderful addition to their lucky new forever families.

In His Own Words: Houston's Progress Report

Only been in NY since New Year's Eve and look how much better I look!

This was me on my first day in NY. I love being a New Yorker!

Howdy y'all. Houston here. Why, me and 30 of my pals were relinquished from a Texas breeder. Even made dem fancy newscasts. Anywhoo, some kind-hearted folks sprung me from that yucky situation and drove me on the interstates all the way up to New York. And I mean it, you yankees be treatin' me real nice. I don't mean to brag, but I'm now up to date on shots! Yee-haw! And boy it sure feels good to no longer have them nasty fleas using my tail for a tailgate party. And I'm finally neutered, which means I am no longer a stud in the literal sense of the word, but rather a "stud" like "stud muffin". Good lookin' and fit as a fiddle. That's me.

Having a name is a new experience for me. Ain't never had one before. But I sure do like my purdy new name, and I'm quickly learning to recognize it.

I ain't never heard of this "housebreaking" thing before. My foster mama has been watching me like a hawk and every time I start to lift my leg on the furniture she says no and brings me outside. Then she praises me when I do my business there. She's real particular about that. And I'm hankerin' to master this whole routine. Hopefully I will real soon.

And what in tarnation is "basic commands"? I have no clue what "sit" or "stay" or "come" means. That must be some native New York gibberish I guess. I just stare blankly when I hear those things. Hopefully by the time I'm adopted I will have made the connection between words and expectations. Foster mama's been giving me treats when I do it right.

This here New York is a mysterious place. They have weird new things here, like, stairs. And baths. And toys. And milkbones. And people who take you on long walks, with a leash! So much change has come into my life so quickly. Darn tootin' craziness! But I figure I stick with it. I've already made great strides. I'm starting to really get the hang of how stairs work. I reckon with consistency & patience, I will grow more comfortable with all of these new concepts.

I say, there's somethin' else I must confess that's rather embarrassing. When another dog approaches my food dish while I'm eating, or attempts to take a toy out of my mouth, I give them an ugly growl, and it makes them back off lickety split. Before I moved to New York, individual resources for us dogs were as scarce as hen's teeth, so I'm conditioned to protect what little I have. Show 'nuff my foster mama be trying to help me with this unfortunate hang up.

But listen here. Overall, my personality and temperament is hunky dorey. I'm a very gentle soul. Sweeter and softer than homemade puddin'. Perfectly content to lay on your lap or stretch out on the kitchen floor, whichever the case may be. I ain't bothered by nobody. Dogs, cats, kids, strangers... they're all dandy to me. Just so long as they ain't goin' after my food or taking toys out of my mouth! Crates don't bother me neither. Heck, I spent the majority of my life in a crate, so I feel right at home. I swear, you won't find a more laid-back gentlemen. My foster mama says I'm one step up from owning a stuffed teddy bear. So why not rope me in & let me be your southern comfort. I'm fixin to meet you!

Paws of Texas Rescue - GEM's story

Paws of Texas Basset Rescue are calling her GEM, one of the Texas Bassets rescued and brought into the veterinarian on Thursday.

From the Paws of Texas FaceBook page a very cool note from GEM:

"Guess what?! Today one of the people from Paws of Texas took me to the vet and he told me I'm pregnant! Then they kissed me and petted me and even trimmed my toenails. They said my nails were way too long...they did hurt when I walked. After the doctor, the nice lady drove me to a place where she bathed me. You wouldn't believe how dirty I was! She massaged my whole body with this good smelling shampoo. Yum! Everyone said my name should be Gem, and I love it! It will help me forget my horrible past. Well I'm pooped, night everyone! :-P"

The vet is concerned about Gem's weight, especially with her pregnancy. Currently, they have her eating puppy kibble mixed with canned puppy and baby food to help her gain weight. She is also getting special vitamins to help her with the pregnancy. She hasn't known much of a life other than breeding and this will be her last litter, thankfully. She has never truly been shown love or had a home. Gem will remain in foster care until her puppies are weaned and she can be spayed. The vet said she is about 1 month pregnant. Hopefully, they will all find wonderful, loving, forever homes and Gem can begin to enjoy life.

Leaving the vet's office in Texas! Looks like they are ready to be New Yorkers!

These lucky 5 are on their way into a new life, to live indoors as part of loving families. They look like beautiful houndies. We have a 22 month old male, Austin, a 7 yr old male, Houston, and an 8 yr old female, Dallas. Twin female littermates Abiline and Amarilla are 21 months old. The twins are small, only 30lbs!

They are stopping in Little Rock, Arkansas to meet their next transporter, then on to Nashville to meet Bob Richardson and the ABC van! They are scheduled to be in Buffalo around noon on Saturday!

They've all been vetted in Texas, spayed/neutered and microchipped. Hopefully all they will need once they get here is a good bath and an introduction to snow!

This Tuesday, ABC Basset Rescue of NY stepped up to the plate to take 6 of more than 30 Basset Hounds rescued from a large puppy mill in Boerne, Texas. The breeder, a local couple dealing with health problems and foreclosure, is going out of business. They turned to the Animal Welfare Society of Bandera County for help. The Animal Welfare Society put the word out to Basset Hound and other breed rescue groups across the country. Volunteers brought the dogs to the Hill Country Animal League office in Boerne to get checked out by a veterinarian, and rescue organizations were on hand to select the dogs to take in.

The local vet said they are in amazingly good health for so many dogs coming in from one facility. There are several that suffer from ‘cherry’ eye, or cataracts, and most have some teeth problems, but, generally, they are in good health overall. The news report said they are all AKC registered, with documented breeding lines. (These are the same puppies we find in pet stores in NY!) The hounds range in age from 8 months to 8 years old. Four of the females are pregnant and are being taken to facilities that have whelping resources.

There are plenty of Bassets that need our help, so if you ever considered fostering or adopting, now is the time!

Currently, 5 of the ABC Bassets are at a Texas veterinarian getting spayed/neutered and micro-chipped. One with very bad cherry eye is undergoing corrective surgery. We will post pictures of these 5 as soon as we have them. They are 3 girls - Dallas, an 8-year old, and Abilene and Amarillo, 21-month old littermates - and 2 boys, Austin and Houston.

Buddy, The Basset Angel

We've chosen Buddy's story for this special time of year as it best shows the wonder of the Basset Hound. So often folks question why we work so hard to re-home Basset Hounds. Their reputation as a breed in the U.S. isn't great. They are stubbornly insistent on their own way (in loud voice), manipulative, and prone to a host of physical ailments. Perhaps the worst criticism of the breed is that they are difficult to housebreak and train. These traits can be found in most dog breeds as well as mixed breeds. However, Bassets, bred as the poor man's hunting dog (their masters didn't own horses to keep up with them), needed to work independent of man and together as a pack, with little or no supervision. In the working Basset, independence of thinking, persistence, durability, and the hound trait of loyalty and affection to its pack make the Basset the perfect hunting companion.

So perhaps these traits are a little more pronounced in the Basset, and hounds in general, than in other dogs. I'll never forget struggling with Apollo, my first Basset - and perhaps the most stubborn, pigheaded, persistent puppy that has ever graced the Earth. I'd had dogs before, and bought all the stuff about being pack leader and discipline, but none of it worked with Apollo. We brought in a professional trainer and paid him tons of money (he relied mostly on treat training), with disastrous results. Apollo loves treats, but he loves getting his own way even more. In desperation (not knowing about groups like ABC) I turned to a Basset Hound training manual for Dummies. I'll never forget the advice in that manual that worked was as simple as common sense itself. It said you can't discipline a Basset into behaving - you have to let him think the good behavior is HIS or HER idea. This is all that ever worked with my Bassets. Positive reinforcement, a little telepathy and love do the trick. Maybe that's the way we should train all breeds.

Sometimes I think Bassets are actually smarter than their humans. Usually, I've found that their way is the right way. We never had housebreaking issues - UNLESS they were left for too long a period of time. They will always pick the easiest wooded path. They are loud when they need to be to let me know some stranger is at the door, or that something in the house isn't quite right. They insist on sleeping on the bed, but I know that no one can get past them to do me or my family any harm. These are the very same traits that create such criticism of the Basset breed. In a secure, loving home their loyalty and fierce dedication to their humans' well-being is, quite simply, astonishing. They are affectionate to a fault, loyal, intelligent and loving - usually not only of their own family, but of everyone and every other animal as well. What would you pay for this kind of companionship if you could buy it off the store shelf? Any relationship between canines and us is a lot of work - at least in the beginning. And, it seems, in these times ‘a lot of work’ often results in a homeless hound. But the joy and happiness a Basset can bring to a household is worth so much more than the work it takes to get there!

Buddy's story shows how a secure, loving environment (not least of which includes a network of support like ABC that is responsive to the breed’s issues) allow the Basset's strengths to be an enormous help and positive influence in family life. Buddy came to ABC as a 3-year old untrained, un-housebroken, neglected and malnourished hound. He had not been neutered. He came from a broken home who had put a 17 year old in charge of taking care of him. His meals and walks were often forgotten, and he was 10-15 lbs underweight. And he was sick, with Lyme’s disease. This is the sad story of so many hounds that wind up in shelters that deem them un-adoptable. Thankfully, for Buddy and his forever home, he was relinquished to ABC Rescue. His foster parents Kandy & Tom did an amazing job of training him to get him ready for his new family, and ABC went the extra mile to treat his illness and support him through this learning period. For all that, I'll bet Buddy is an exceptional hound. At 3 years old it's much tougher for a hound to learn everything he needs to learn to live in the world of humans than it is for a puppy who doesn't have to unlearn bad behaviors.

Buddy's adoption listing describes him as a spunky 3-year old with lots of personality. If you had a bad day at work, no problem - Buddy will be there to greet you and brighten up your entire day! All he asks in return is lots of love & attention. Guy saw Buddy's picture on the ABC website, showed it to his children - that, as Guy says, "was all she wrote."

Some things are just meant to be, and as Guy writes in his letter to ABC, Buddy came into their lives when they most needed him. Guy's family brought Buddy home on a Saturday and, sadly, Guy's Dad passed away on the following Monday. Guy tells the story best in the following beautiful letter he wrote to thank ABC for Buddy's life.

I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful addition to our family Buddy has been. I’d always wanted a basset hound but somehow it never happened. There on your website was a picture of Buddy. I showed it to my children and that, as the saying goes, was all she wrote.

Maybe all bassets are special. Maybe we were just lucky Buddy came into our lives when we needed him most. We picked Buddy up on a Saturday. That Monday, sadly, my father passed away. It was the first time my children, both of whom are commonly called “special needs” have experienced the death of a family member. It was particularly hard on my son. He and Grandpa always had a singular relationship. As hard as such a thing is to get through for a “normal” person, it would have been doubly so for Jacob. I’m not sure how we would have done it were it not for Buddy, but Buddy was there for him and made the difference. I will never forget the sight of my son, full of grief, burying his face in Buddy’s coat and sobbing, and the unbelievable tenderness with which this wonderful hound responded. He was so gentle and patient with Jacob. I don’t know how Buddy understood what was happening, but understood he definitely did. He provided solace and companionship not only to my son, but to all of us just when we needed it the most.

Buddy follows Jacob everywhere. When Jacob leaves for school in the morning, Buddy is there to say goodbye. When Jacob comes home, Buddy is there waiting for him. The joy on both their faces at this daily reunion is a pleasure to behold. In fact, the only one who ever gets kisses from Buddy is Jacob. Buddy’s tag lists Jacob as owner, something my son is immeasurably proud of, but the fact is, there is no owner in this relationship, there are only best friends.

Our most heartfelt thanks to your wonderful organization and particularly the Van Skivers, Buddy’s foster family, for all that you do for these special dogs.

What a wonderful letter and what better answer to “why rescue?”

As a footnote to this story, Guy wrote me a wonderful tale of Buddy in the midst of construction work he was having done at his house. I'm reproducing it here because it shows so well the independent thinking and passion of the Basset breed:

..."It was a big concern of mine that Buddy, who believes a Basset Hound, by definition, is an integral part of any activity, would prove to be too much of an overpowering presence for the men to actually get any work done. I assigned my daughter the task of keeping Buddy at bay. Buddy of course found this to be intolerable and vocalized, loudly, his opinion that without his superb managerial skills the project was doomed to utter failure. No doubt you can imagine the tension this caused for all concerned. Finally the decision was made by my daughter to give Buddy his way. Amazingly, for a human but not for a Basset I guess, it turns out he was correct. The contractor told me that Buddy is quietly content to sit out of the way and watch the work being done, offering helpful advice, (Buddy's supervisory skills are so great that he conveys his message with just a soulful glance at the right moment) along with a head that loves to be scratched whenever someone needs a break. Now the men working on the house want Buddy there watching them. They say "he's a real sweetheart". I fear Buddy's ego will be intolerably huge after this episode. He definitely has been sporting an "I told you so" look of late.

I don't think Buddy's ego will suffer - he's probably always known that he knows best!

Yes, all Bassets are special and deserving of such a wonderful home as Guy and his family provide. Thank you Guy, Jessica and Jacob for adopting Buddy and for being his “best friends”. Thank you for giving him such a wonderful forever home. Last, but not least, thanks so much to ABC for getting him there. We wish Guy, Jessie and Jacob, family healing and peace from the grief of their loss, and much love for the Holidays. May you have many happy, healthy years with Buddy to enjoy.

Happy Thanksgiving from Trixi!

Looks like she truly did have a very Happy Thanksgiving. When you think about it, Trixi's journey from a Southern puppy mill, where she probably had hundreds of puppies, to a warm, cozy home is an amazing rescue story.

Trixi was one of the oldest of 34 dogs rescued from a Missouri puppy mill and brought to NY into foster care by the kind folk at ABC in 2009. Her puppy mill name was Cotton Top, such an awful name for such a beautiful lady. Her intake photo shows what terrible shape she was in.

Trixi was 10 years old when she came into rescue and, from her picture, looked like she just had puppies. Hard to believe anyone would breed such a lady for 10 years. She had a few teeth removed before she came into ABC but needed additional work. The vet found several more tooth infections and abscesses that went right down into her jaw bone. She must have been in such terrible pain. ABC supported her during this time and took her back to the vet and Emergency Room several times. She was in hospice care at ABC for a while after uncontrollable bleeding followed the vet's trying to clean her teeth. The vet even suggested putting a tampon in her nose to stop the bleeding! Everyone thought she might die. The support and kindness of her rescuers helped her and she was finally stabilized.

This lady is a true survivor and you can see from her picture what a sweet, great lady she is. She has such a beautiful smile! Trixi was in foster care for a year with ABC and was adopted in December, 2010 by a wonderful, kind soul, Victoria. They recently moved to Texas and Trixi is enjoying her new life there in her forever home. So Trixi truly gives Thanks this year for the best 2 years of her life. Trixi's new Mom Victoria says it best, "We adore Trixi! She is a very spoiled but such a deserving girl! We thank ABC every day for saving her and letting us have her. Soon it will be a year that she is with us."

Thank you ABC for hanging in there with Trixi! Her story offers encouragement and inspiration to all rescuers trying to provide secure homes for unwanted senior hounds. And thank you Victoria for giving her the forever home she so deserves.

Keep smiling Trixi, we all wish you and Victoria many healthy, joyful years to come!

Queen Shelby - Puppy Mill To Forever Home!

Awwww, Gary and Kathy Penny are foster failing with Shelby! Shelby was brought up from a puppy mill in MO back in Dec 2009. She was adopted but her new home was unable to socialize her to family life and she was returned to ABC. Gary and Kathy have been fostering her since May 2010 and, with great patience and perseverance, gotten her to overcome some of her fear of humans and enjoy her new household. Shelby was voted 2011 Queen at the ABC Summer Fest and looks beautiful in her regalia! What a wonderful lady she is!

Congratulations to Shelby! And congratulations to Gary and Kathy who had the love and patience to provide her with a great forever home and a happy end to her rescue story! May you enjoy many years of happiness and love with her.

Hi to all the wonderful folks at ABC Basset Hound Rescue of NY!

My name is Spanky. I wanted to send you all a very special THANK YOU for saving my life, as well as all the lives of my brother and sister Bassets. I don’t like to think about where we would be without you. I think I have a pretty amazing tale, and just thought you all should hear it - because without you, I wouldn’t be enjoying my walks or sunshine or DINNER or anything at all anymore. I probably would have missed my 10th birthday party, which was a blast (especially the steak dinner!) - I really wouldn’t have wanted to miss that!

To begin with, I had a nice family and home from when I was just an 8 week old pup and a little boy to play with. I had health issues also which weren’t getting any better. They also thought I had mental problems and gave me some drug called Prozac, which I didn’t like very much. Just about when I turned 9 years old, my family decided they had to give me away. Thankfully, ABC was there to help me. They found me a nice foster home, where I could live in a house instead of a cage at the pound. But in the beginning I was depressed for months, missing my family and my little baby boy. I did like my foster Daddy a lot and little by little I was happier and started wagging my tail, especially when Dad was around. There were 2 other Bassets in my new household, a nice older gentleman named Apollo (he’s really old and also paralyzed, so he can’t play very much) and a very bossy older lady named BellaRoo. I was kind of afraid of her and tried to keep lots of space between us most of the time (even though she was not even half my size). I got along with them ok but it wasn’t as much fun as playing with little dogs and kids.

Since my foster folks really loved me bunches, they decided to adopt me, so my moving days were finally over. Just about when I thought everything would be ok I got really sick. I was in the hospital for 2 entire weeks and couldn’t eat a thing, although my new parents brought me everything from steak to lobster. I couldn’t even look at the food. The doctors diagnosed me with a bunch of illnesses, diabetes, hypothyroidism, pancreatitis and I don‘t know what else. I just laid around the hospital, very miserable, and towards the end of the 2 weeks I couldn’t even get up to walk. The doctors couldn’t tell my new parents if I were dying or not and they didn’t know what to do. They were very upset, not knowing if it would be kinder to send me to the bridge place. So, they turned to you all for advice. And again you all came through with prayers, support and - best of all - advice. The best advice in the world! You all advised my parents to take me home. The doctors wouldn’t let me go home without a stupid feeding tube in my nose, which was awfully annoying. But they said I had to eat to be able to take the insulin injections I needed, so my Mom and Dad took me home with a feeding tube and some crummy liquid food. I gave that up pretty quick, let me tell you, and figured out how to pull that stupid tube out all on my own! Little by little I got better. I had a bad setback when I went blind suddenly due to the diabetes and had a few very bad days bumping into things, but I’ve adjusted very well to that. My Dad tests my blood sugar, feeds me this special diet food and gives me insulin injections and meds twice a day. I don’t mind so much because he sings special Spanky songs to me while he does it and I really LOVE the Spanky songs. I’ve taught my Mom how to be a seeing-eye person and she’s doing very well. We can now walk down the street safely which I’m glad about because I love my walks!

So, that’s my story. I celebrated my 10th birthday on May 23 and attended my first Halloween costume party. I didn’t like wearing a devil costume very much, but I put up with it because I do love my new Mom and Dad, and the treat bag I got was awesome! My Mom was afraid I’d be scared of all the other dogs because I can’t see, but I was fine and even played with them a little bit. I don’t really know how to thank you all for my life. I know my Mom and Dad love me very much and I don’t know what they would do without me. And thank you for getting me to them too, because I love them as well as you all too! I’m really looking forward to meeting you all soon at the next ABC event!

With the holidays approaching very soon I just wanted to remind people that like all animals, Bassest LOVE
to enjoy the Treats that our children get while Trick-Treating( or handing out). It's very easy for them to sneak
a treat or 2 since they are eye- level :) for not just the candy but for getting out of the house to follow all the wonderful smells & then lost :( . So maybe for new fosters (dogs) we can
make a little safety area for them. I know I will be keeping my eyes on Susie Q, she loves to sneak up and/or down the stairs lately so I'm onto her.lol Live, Love & protect all !!

Can You Help a Homeless Hounds with a warm loving Home???

Here is just two reasons of why we do what we do to help the Homeless Hounds!

Chloe was dumped with her mom,Daisy, at a house in the country. The family has tried to find them a home since September before turning them over to ABC.

Chloe is a little timid at first meeting, but once you give her some love and a treat she warms up pretty quickly. Her foster home said that she is a great dog and really smart. She is housebroken and loves the other dogs in the foster home. She loves to cuddle and be around people, but will just as easily runn off to play with the other dogs. She is approx 4 years old and is spayed.

Daisy was dumped at a house in the country with her daughter, Chloe. The family tried since September to find them a home before they turned them over to us.

She is approx 6 years old and a real sweatheart! She loves to cuddle and gets along with the other dogs in the home. She loves to chase the chickens on the farm. Her foster family thinks she is an awesome dog! She is housebroken and has an all around sweet disposition.

This year FuzzFest is scheduled for August 13th - inside the J. M. McDonald Sports Complex in Cortland , NY - just off I81, 20 miles south of Syracuse . The event looks like it is expanding, with vendors already interested and signed on - it should be great day. Plus, we just got word that Shorty, from Animal Planet’s ‘Pit Boss’ is going to be with us for the day!!!

Summer Fest and Rescue Rally are almost here.

The committee has spent hundred of man hours to put together an event that
will be second to none.
A lot of work has been done and much more needs to be done---this is where I
need everyone's help! If you are coming please register....some volunteers
are getting ready to start making phones to remind or ask people if they
will be attending. If you are registered....then you will not be called,
thus saving our volunteer's time and effort.

Even if you can not make this event, you can support it in many ways:

Why a Summer Fest/ Waddle

Why would a group of people work so hard to raise money for a droopy eared hounds? Well, there are many reasons and here are two.

I have been involved with Basset Rescue since the early 90's. My first basset was a rescue from BRoWNY. Toots was a dog that was destine not to live with just anyone. She has some serious issues from being abused from her previous family. I fell in love with her from her picture, not knowing she had seizures and other medical issues. But she was a love and I wanted to give back to the group, so I got involved. One of the greatest events I ever went to or participated in was when we had a big waddle in Genesee Valley Park. We walked the dogs in the Lilac parade after transporting them on a city bus. It was so cool. We had a huge party and raised some money. We had a ball and everyone got to know each other and become friends. Friends who were there in hard times and there to share jokes and stories. It started with the dogs, but it really became about the camaraderie and love and the joy in being there for each other and of course, the dogs.

Another member, Tom Rodwell chimed in with "I’ve been involved with rescue for over 12 years and it’s been rewarding to say the least. It’s not just about the dogs – it’s also about you – yes you! After delivering numerous dogs to their new owners and seeing the joy on your faces when you first meet your hound, has made the many trips down south and across the state I’ve taken worth it. Hearing the wonderful success stories and seeing the pictures of you and your new basset friend is what it’s all about. You see, it’s a win-win situation so come on – spread the joy you saved a life!!! Come to the waddle – you and your basset won’t be disappointed!

So if you are wondering why a group of people would go to such extremes to raise money for bassets.....well, that is just part of the story....You'll have to come to the Summer Fest to experience it yourself.

There are many different ways you and your family can volunteer to help out such as staffing booths, selling tickets, checking water bowls, helping out with games, or cleaning and setting up. The Summer fest is two days and there will be a big turn out of dog lovers and their owners.

Breakfast with Bassets

Saturday, May 14th, ABC will be hosting "Breakfast with Bassets" at sites all over New York State. "We are asking all attending to bring a gift/donation to join the breakfast. These gifts/donations will then be used for our baskets at our main fund raiser event of the year the first weekend in June, in Rochester. Donation Ideas include: dog products, basset items, candles, wine, gift certificates, home decor etc. We are asking that all gifts be new, not used", said Kathy Penny, volunteer coordinator for the Rochester site. This coming June, ABC Basset Hound Rescue, Inc is doing something that is totally differnt than ever before. ABC will be hosting a indoor event in Rochester, at the Fair & Expo Center!

Just think---weather will not matter! Will there be enough room? How about 23,000sq feet---How big is that? Take the sqaure footage of your home and divide that into 23,000sq ft. for me that would 19 of my homes!

This is going to be a 2 day event---

We need new foster homes

One of the most rewarding things you can do as a volunteer is help a Basset in need by opening up your home for temporary shelter. Many of our dogs come from situations where they have been neglected and displaced. ABC brings in dogs and gives them a new lease on life. As a foster, you have such an impact on that transition. Maybe your not sure if a dog will fit into your lifestyle. This is a great way to experience living with a basset and finding how much love and joy they can bring to your world.

Maybe you have been a foster caregiver before and currently your home is full, there are other ways you can help.

Kathy Roberts is looking for some help and a little bit of your time. She says, “I have been asked by Gary Penny and accepted the task of heading up a small group of folks to recruit and retain some new foster homes. What I am looking for are a few key folks in different areas of NY state to volunteer 1 day a month to setting up an information table at your local grocery store, movie theaters, vet office, even at the mall giving hand outs. You would explain who we are and what our mission is all about (fostering being the focus) and how rewarding this part of dog rescuing can be not only for the dogs, but for the whole family. This will be a group effort I cannot accomplish this alone, the more we get out the word about fostering the better for all of us.”

Transporting, the joy and tears

A long time ago, I transported a very little basset to a foster home location. I went home crying and told my soon to be husband that I was going back to get him. I got a phone call the next day..."The poor little fellow did not do well at the foster home and would have to be transported somewhere else and could I help out?" Could I? It was a sign. So off we went to get Caleb and brought him home. He has been with us since 2003. He had five different homes before the age of three. He was bad mannered, bit my poor husband and does a lot of nasty things, like eating poop and is not house broken to this day. But he wormed his little paws into our hearts and is cherished by his family including his big brother. We call them the Butt Boyz as they often are found sleeping next to each other, butt to butt. Unfortunately, Caleb is quite sick, but that is for another story. I know it is very hard to transport and not want to take all the doggies home.

But transporting is so important to the survival of the dogs. Sometimes, the safety of the dog is only guaranteed if the dog is removed from its situation immediately. ABC has done some really big transports of dogs from some really awful situations. But the weekend runs done by volunteers are so vital to this organization.

As Carly said, " I get attached easily and feel so guilty when I can not keep them. I was advised today that is does not get any easier as time goes on. I guess I will have many more tears ahead of me. I laughed on the way home thinking of all the funny things Maggie did in her short time with me."

Garry and Linda who also helped in this transport said;"Poor Maggie was quite frightened and confused and cowering at beginning of our leg of the trip. Linda sat in back seat with her the entire trip, giving her rubs and words of encouragement. By the time we passed Amsterdam, she was much more comfortable. We absolutely love being able to help in any way to assist these beautiful dogs find some happiness."

Part of transporting might entail hosting the dog for the night. What a fun experience for the family to have a guest pup for a short visit. Justin said, "She is fitting in just nicely here at her sleepover at our house before she finishes here trip to her foster home tomorrow."

If you are looking for a way to get involved, but not ready for a full time commitment to a dog, transporting and fostering are a great way to experience "That Basset Thing!"

Summer Fest June 4 & 5th

The Event of the Year!

This will be a 2 day event. Saturday will be our traditional basset hound event with raffles, games, and the royal court. Sunday is shaping up to be a Rescue Rally with multiple vendors and rescue groups. Onsite camping for up to 40 RV's-with complete hooks ups, hotels close by, and on site parking for hundreds of cars. This maybe the largest indoor event of this kind---at least in the northeast.

The Story of Geri Patrick

On Sept 15, ABCBHR received a call from a dog warden in the Albany area. He stated that a resident called him about a basset. The resident heard a car drive down her street, stop, heard a car door close then heard the car drive off. The resident went outside and found a 10 year old basset wandering in the street.

The dog warden did warn us that he was old, not neutered, and had several open sores. He stated that he deemed him unadoptable due to his age and medical conditions. If we could not help this senior, he'd be euthanized after his 5 days at the kennel if he wasn't claimed.

Our Albany volunteers immediately stepped into action and got this hopeless geriatric senior who was named "Geri Patrick" out of the kennel. He went to a foster home where he played in the backyard, took walks and mingled with the neighborhood dogs. Our foster home took him to the vet and we received an estimate of $1100 for neutering, a dental, care for his open sores, and vaccinations. He was scheduled for surgery Sept 30.

Today, September 30th, Geri Patrick went in for his surgery. Once he was on the operating table, the vet discovered he was filled with cancer. ABCBHR's volunteers decided the best thing to do was to relieve him of his suffering and send him to the Rainbow Bridge.

Geri's ashes will be buried in ABCBHR's memorial garden where he will join the other ABCBHR bassets who never made it to their forever home.

Jake is a very mellow dog, at times he likes to play with the other dogs ,but for the most part he is content to sit back and watch. He is good with both adults and kids. Jake loves his walks, and trots along at a fast pace. He does very well at meal times and is house trained. Jake is a barker, and when he gets started it is difficult to get him to stop. Over all he is a very nice dog and not to many issues, if any.

Mikey is a young dog with a lot of potential. On the plus side he is very lovable and responds well to adults and kids. For the most part he gets along with the other dogs and walks very well on a leash. The problem areas for Mikey is with his food and attention. When it is meal time he will jump up and try to get at the food before it is ready to be given to him. When he gets it he will gobble it down as quick as possible. When I am giving Mikey some attention and another dog comes up to get some attention Mikey will growl at him. A few minor problem areas ,but we are working on them and he is responding well.

Stewie is an absolute sweetheart. He loves to give kisses and likes attention from anyone who will give him some. Stewie gets along well with the other dogs and walks along nicely on a leash. he will jump up when it is meal time and will gobble his food down rather quick. With time I think he will realize no one is going to take his food from him. I see signs of improvement already. He should make some lucky person very happy someday.

For our 2010 Raffle, we offer a red 1968 Corvette roadster with black interior, with a like new black soft top plus the optional black vinyl hard top. Equipped with a 327 c.i. / 350 HP engine, four speed manual transmission and stainless steel exhaust. The car was recently completely striped and repainted in the original high gloss Rally Red. Mostly original except for the stereo and shifter. Interior is in very good original condition with no rips or tears. The engine has approximately 1000 miles on it since it was rebuilt and there are no options such as power windows to worry about going bad. A beautiful car from front to back and it could be yours!

Hi! My name is Mitzie. I am NOT a Basset Hound. Let me tell you about Friday afternoon.

We had a little get together. Mom said we were very good dogs. She was setting up her junk sale. (I have no idea what that is.)
As you can see, I am surrounded by Basset Hounds. They are fun but, sometimes they're exhausting.
I know that's not nice to say. This is how I feel, sometimes.

Mom hooked up this Pink Mist thing for us. It cooled us off. All I heard about, was this waddle the bassets attended, last weekend.(See previous post.) Each of them had a different "Favorite Thing" about the Waddle.
They are so confusing!
I didn't go. That's okay, I get enough Basset Hound contact, trust me.

On behalf of everyone at ABC, we would like to thank everyone that helped and came out supported this year’s waddle! Good weather, lots of fun and great people enjoying the day and a whole bunch of dogs! We were very lucky; the day of the waddle was sunny and warm with threats of rain. It did start to rain just after we starting marching down main street, but very lightly and it cool everything down just a bit….then it stopped and the sun returned. Over all it was a great full of music, food, fun, games, and lots of howling.

The waddle is upon us! Join us this Saturday at 10am in Chittenango for the Oz-Festival where HUNDREDS of basset hounds will waddle down the yellow brick road of Main St! This years Royal Court will be announced, games will be played, food will be eaten, loot will be sold at the Slobber Shoppe. The parade starts at 2pm. For those staying the weekend, we will be having a Welcome party Friday at the waddle site next to the Chittenango Library.

My family foster failed with me. This means, I stayed at their home, when, I came to N.Y. and never left.I have my "Forever Home."

She is a foster failure,too! It sounds so negative but, really, it is a positive!

Mick, a fun loving Basset Hound has found his "forever home"!! He left Boom Towne Canine Campus yesterday!

We would like to thank all of the staff at Boom Towne. You guys are the BEST!!!

Hi! I am Stevie. I am part of the "Fleetwood Four" that arrived in NY, a few short weeks ago.

I am now with my foster family, learning lots of new things. As you can see, I have joined the "Fat Pack." That is what mommy calls them,not me,I am too nice.
Me in the middle of the couch ,Miss Elly on the right, and my new best bud Potsie on the floor. Potsie will run and play with me all day.We both have inner puppies!

Remember Chet and Ellie Mae

Chet and Ellie Mae each were part of our Home for the Howlidays Rescue mission where we brought in 34 puppy mill dogs. They came in from two different puppy mills, in two states, stayed at Boom Towne during different weeks, and were adopted at different times, but ended up in the same forever home...and they couldn't be happier! Chet enjoys picking daffodils and sitting outside. Ellie Mae enjoys chasing the cats and napping in her kennel. But they enjoy each other most of all...and cookies of course. They may be featured on the Dog Whisperer at some point so Cesar can help Ellie Mae get over her shyness of people, especially men. Chet and Ellie Mae are also headed on their first vacation this summer to the dog friendly Outer Banks!

Congratulations Chet and Ellie Mae for finding the perfect forever home and getting spoiled rotten! See you at the Waddle!

Fleetwood Four Arrive in New York

This was a busy weekend for the members of the Fleetwood Four, named after the members of Fleetwood Mac. From a foster home in Missouri they road in cars, planes, and through the rain to make it one step closer to their forever homes by arriving in Rochester, NY early Sunday afternoon. Until a few foster homes open up, these guys will be staying at Boomtowne with daily visits from volunteers. Without further ado...

Successful St Patricks Day Pawty

On March 20, ABC held a St. Patrick's Day Pawty at Boomtowne in Farmington, NY. Over 60 hounds and 80 people show up to support the hounds and have a great time. The purpose of the pawty was two-fold. Not only did we host an event for everyone to enjoy, but we honored Boomtowne with a plaque to thank them for all of their help this winter. Without Boomtowne and their staff, we could have never rescued over 30 dogs this winter from all over the state.

St Patricks Day Pawty

ABC will be holding our Annual St. Patrick’s day “Pawty” at Boomtowne Canine Center featuring games, contests, The Slobber Shoppe, food, and fun!

When: Saturday March 20th 1:00-4:00 PM
Where: Boomtowne Canine Center
1296 Beaver Creek Rd.
Farmington, NY 14225
(5 minutes from Exit 44 off I-90)

We also need volunteers for the event! If you are interested in volunteering this Saturday, please click here.

1) Seating will be VERY limited. We are asking folks to bring along their own foldable chairs (like those nylon camp chairs).

2) We presently have 80 people and about 60 dogs pre-registered. That's a lot humans and hounds! Please make sure your hound is people and dog friendly. If they are not, or get stressed and overwhelmed easily, it may be best to keep them at home. There will not be room for crates or ex-pens.

3) There is an entrance charge of $7 per person over 12 (which will include 2 slices of pizza and 1 soda) and $5 under 12 (which will include 1 slice of pizza and 1 soda).

We have had great success this howliday season adopting the 30+ puppy mill dogs to there forever homes and over 100 hounds this year! But we still have plenty of dogs available for adoption. Here they are:

These dogs from the Missouri Puppy Mill and are ready to be adopted.

Kea - 6
Kea is a little bit timid when you approach her from standing up, but once you are petting her she is happy for all the rubbing.

Cotton Top - almost 10
Cotton Top is the old lady of the gang. She has a growth on her bottom and very few teeth left, but she loves being scratched.

Quad Paws (aka Selena) - 5.5
Quad Paws does have four paws, just like all other dogs, so the people at Boom Towne have been calling her Selena. She is a very petite girl who has very unusual coloring. She is mostly a very light brown, but has a dusting of black over her back. She is incredibly excited when she gets attention and loves to be scratched just about anywhere.

The following bassets are on hold for now, but will be available in the coming weeks.

Charm - 6
Charm is a spunky girl who's been nicknamed "Little Miss Humpsalot" so she has a little bit of manners to learn, but she isn't pushy about it and is more than happy to get off when you ask her. She was adopted, but the family may be unable to keep her, so we are working on finding a better permanent home for her.

Sasha - 4
Sasha is a four year old sweet girl from the Missouri batch of dogs. She was the only one who tested positive for heartworm, so she is staying at the vets office until her treatment is done. She will be up for adoption after she is free and clear of heartworm.

Dolly - puppy
Dolly is a 6-7 month old littermate to Ruby and Hazel. Ruby and Hazel quickly adjusted to life outside the puppy mill and are enjoying play time and belly rubs in there forever homes. Dolly is still extremely nervous and has been spending a few weeks in a foster home getting used to people and having fun with some other dogs before she will be adopted out.

Bradley - 1
Bradley is a littermate of Olivia and Madison, who were successfully adopted at our adoption fair and happily settling into their forever homes. Unlike his sisters, Bradley was incredibly nervous around people is not quite ready to be adopted out, but will be available soon. He is learning to enjoy lots of attention in his foster home.

These senior ladies are not from the midwest puppy mills, but were owner turn ins and are available for adoption.

Tulip - 12
Tulip is a 12 year old female that loves to snuggle on the couch or your bed and she is a real "talker". Young children make her nervous, so an adult home would be best. She is good with other dogs and cats. Can be left alone inside for 7 hrs. with no problems.

Heidi - 11
Heidi is a lovely lemon and white lady of 11 yrs. Gets along with other dogs and has always lived with a cat. Loves children of all ages. Her owner had to move into an apt. and could not take her with him.

Over the past week, nearly all of the Missouri dogs that were staying at Boom Towne have been adopted out. Those that haven't are currently in foster homes until they are clear of some health issues. Getting as many of the 30+ bassets adopted out in time for the holidays was the best present all of us with ABC could wish for. ABC would like to thank everyone involved with this successful undertaking of rescuing these dogs including: the ABC board, all of the coordinators and volunteers who put in many many hours with the dogs, our adopters who are taking over the lovely task of taking care of these dogs, everyone who donated to the cause, and everyone readings this blog.
